Feasting at Buranda Village30 Apr 2018
When a craving for a giant burrito strikes, or a hankering for a Portuguese chicken feast, head to Buranda Village for the ultimate choice of Guzman y Gomez or Nando's.
A Mexican fiesta at Guzman y Gomez
Guzman y Gomez is an Australian-owned taqueria chain specialising in authentic Mexican dishes such as burritos, nachos, tacos, quesadillas and fajitas made from real ingredients. Their up to 24-hour marinades, chip-tasting sessions and chillies, really get the team at Guzman y Gomez going! But what really makes GyG great is they don't take shortcuts and they use fresh ingredients and authentic techniques with not a microwave in sight.
The GyG menu is extensive but it's super easy to navigate with a couple of simple steps:
Step 1. Choose your style: burrito, burrito bowl, nachos, nacho fries, tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas, salads or kids picks.
Step 2. Choose your filling: spicy or mild - including free range grilled chicken, pulled pork, grilled steak, slow cooked beef, pan seared barramundi or sauteed vegetables with guacamole (add extras like sour cream or black beans).
Step 3. Add optional fries or corn chips with guacamole or queso (cheese sauce).
Step 4. Add a drink and dessert for a complete Mexican experience! The whole family can enjoy the taste of traditional Jarritos (a latin soft drink made in Mexico), while the grown-ups can indulge in a margarita or ice cold Corona. Astonishingly, Guzman y Gomez purchases 22,000 kilograms of avocados per week and 25,000 kilograms of chicken. Holy guacamole!
Guzman y Gomez boss Mark Hawthorne, former boss of McDonald's UK, says fast food doesn't have to be bad food, and is looking to change Australia's perception of fast food. "I think people are concerned about what the more traditional fast food retailers are serving, whether it is fat, sugar, preservatives and over-processed food".
So if it's quality, fast food you're looking for, check out Guzman y Gomez at Buranda Village today. Click here to view their opening hours.
Portuguese flame-grilled chicken at Nando's
We're sure you've heard of Nando's but if you've never tried it, you're in for a real treat! What makes Nando's unique from other chicken restaurants are their tiny red PERi-PERi chillies which are a special type of African Bird's Eye Chilli. Each chilli plant produces about 300 chillies which are handpicked one at a time, sorted by hand and naturally dried in the African sun. To make their famous PERi-PERi sauce, bastes and marinades, Nando's then mixes the sun dried chillies with onion, oil, herbs, fresh lemon and garlic resulting in a flavour sensation that will have your tastebuds dancing. You can also purchase Nando's sauces in bottles to enjoy a bit of Portuguese flavour at home, either from the restaurant or at Woolworths Buranda Village.
But if you're not a fan of heat, you can still be a fan of Nando's as their PERi-PERi delivers on flavour first and heat second. The sauces come in a range of flavours and levels of heat, but all have a citrus kick from the lemon juice, a hint of earthiness and a tease of heat. Start with delicious and simple Churrasco BBQ. For a little more flavour try the lemon & herb or mango & lime. For a little more bite, Mild or Hot is for you, and for those that love a good kick of heat, try the Xtra Hot. When you order, simply follow the PERi-ometer to work out the heat level that's right for you.
So we've talked about the finger-licking sauces, but not the meat itself. Nando's flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken is marinated for 24 hours in the secret recipe sauce so that the flavours infuse the chicken, and then flame-grilled to perfection in your choice of Nando's basting. You can enjoy a whole chicken with the family, or choose your favourite cut such as tenderloins, BBQ ribs and thigh pieces, with a range of sides such as salads, chips, spicy rice, coleslaw, garlic bread, sweet potato chips and our favourite, corn on the cob. If you want to keep your mitts clean, you can also opt for a burger, wrap or pita instead and add your favourite fillings like cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, avocado, feta cheese, egg, grilled pineapple or caramelised onions. For a true family affair, bring the kids and let them choose from the Nandino's menu. It's just for kids under 12 years and each meal comes with a juice and kids' chips or corn.
